What happens when you are alone?

In the wake of COVID-19, loneliness has emerged as a profound and pressing concern. As we navigated lockdowns and social distancing, many of us grappled with an increase in isolation and a desperate need to fill the void with romantic partners, friends, or even podcasts. This experience of loneliness versus being alone beckons us to explore its depths and invites us to connect with ourselves on a more profound level.

Throughout my travels and countless conversations with my clients, I've observed a significant rise in loneliness. This desperation around solitude has led many to seek constant companionship or distraction, whether through relationships or digital content. However, this incessant need to fill the empty spaces in our lives can hinder us from finding the deep peace we so desperately seek.

Loneliness often signals an internal void craving our own presence and attention. It's a call to fully inhabit our bodies and fill that emptiness with our essence. By embracing solitude and turning inward, we can cultivate an inner light and love that transforms our perception of the world around us.

I've witnessed this transformation countless times in meditation and breathwork classes. When participants complete their practice, they open their eyes to a world brimming with renewed beauty and appreciation. This shift in perspective underscores the power of connecting with oneself.

When we're in love, we frequently attribute our feelings to another person, seeing their divinity and overlooking their flaws. This mirrors our own inner divinity. Alone time is crucial because it allows us to nurture this inner connection without external distractions.

Instead of fleeing from solitude, I invite you to embrace it. Initially, you might encounter anxiety as you face the unresolved emotions and tensions stored in your body and energy field. Many of us have quasi-exited our physical bodies during the past few years, finding ways to detach from ourselves, especially through electronic and virtual means. It's time to temper this and reassess our screen time.

Average screen time has more than tripled since before COVID-19. This excessive digital engagement can feel addictive, and we often justify it by claiming we're working or communicating. However, it's essential to recognize the need for balance and the importance of spending time away from screens.

Short, quick videos, like those on TikTok, can be particularly seductive, drawing us into endless scrolling. These bite-sized distractions can steal our presence and attention, which could be better spent on meaningful activities or interactions. When we reduce our screen time, we can focus more on real-life connections and tasks that genuinely nurture us.

I encourage you to find time each day to disconnect from your devices. Turn off your phone, laptop, and router. Initially, you might feel a compulsive urge to reach for your phone, but this will pass, and you'll find yourself more present in your own space. This disconnection allows us to reconnect with our bodies, our environment, and our inner selves.

As a coach, I see common themes among my clients and in my own life. Many of us feel tired and drained, despite getting enough sleep. This fatigue often stems from the way we live, which can deplete our energy. It's crucial to identify what drains us and what feeds us and to choose actions that nourish us.

Endless scrolling through short videos may provide an immediate distraction but often exacerbates our worries and anxieties. Instead, we should focus on activities that uplift us and bring us joy. By doing so, we become more compassionate and loving, both towards ourselves and others.

In conclusion, let's collectively embrace solitude. Create space for quiet reflection, whether it's through walking alone, going to bed earlier, or simply finding moments of stillness. This time alone helps us transform ourselves and bring more love and light into the world.

Remember, the journey towards inner peace requires presence and dedication. By turning off our devices and tuning into ourselves, we can become vessels for love and light, positively impacting our lives and the world around us.
